My Great-grandfather Johnannes Ferber by: John Ferber
updated: 01/25/01
On October
15, 1866, at age 23 my
Great-grandfather, John Ferber arrived in New York
on the S.S. America from Breman Germany.
He was passenger number 399. His destination
was the U.S.A. and he was listed with an occupation
of "farmer". The home of origin listed on the
passenger list was Buechenbach, Germany.
On June 4, 1866, a young woman named
Amalie Ferber (Age 17) arrived in New York
from Bremen, Germany on the ship "Hermann".
It was very difficult to read the passenger ship
on a list I found at the National Archives. I think
this was Ana Barbara Engel (nee Engel) or
"Annie" Ferber my Great Grandmother.
I think it may be her because the age
corresponds (within a year), and she
lists her place of origin as Hesse, Germany.
John and Annie must have married in Germany
because they had the same last names when she
came over from Bremen. The birth certificate for the
twins(?) born in 1876 reveals that her name
was Ana Barbara Engel from Ernthansen, Germany.
Sometime after she arrived, she took the name of "Annie".
The name of John Ferber (age 27) was listed for
the first time in the 1870, D.C. City Directory as
a butcher, with a store at 4 & a half and K streets SW
His home is listed as, 360 K Street SW
John applied for citizenship with the Supreme Court
of the District of Columbia and became a naturalized
citizen on June 19, 1890. Although, the 1890 Federal
Census was completely destroyed by fire.
